The "v" suffix is missing from the frame. Whatever the case, it's clearly marked as commercial and not military. We would know for sure if it weren't for the heavily pitted right side of the slide. This P38 does not fit into the known serial number range for a police pistol but, other than the serial number, it has the markings for a police pistol. Otherwise, I've stared at the pitting until my eyes hurt but can't make put any additional details. Part of a waffenamt wing can be seen on the right side but you need a loupe and I can't get a picture of it. Unfortunately, sitting on that beam took a toll on the right side of the slide so important identifying stamps are lost forever. He obtained it many years before (as in when P38's were worth very little and nobody was faking them) in exchange for some work done on the house of the Veteran who had brought it home from the war and had left it sitting untouched on a wooden beam in his basement for many years. I obtained this from a friend some years ago now. According to Mike Steves (AKA MrFarb whom I agree with), it was probably produced for some as yet unknown late war contract. According to certain "experts" (who always make me laugh with their snobbish arrogance) it's fake. According to accepted knowledge, it shouldn't exist.but it does. ![]() That's not why I post it but it is a nice bonus I must admit. Posted here is a pistol that seems to piss a select few guys off every time I post it.
